What are you doing?
Raising awareness of body-image issues amongst our students and making them feel more confident in their own skin.
Why are you doing it?
The government has an ethical responsibility to combat the promotion of mental illnesses, particularly eating disorders, through the media and LUU should take initiative and encourage them to do this.
The French National Assembly recently passed a groundbreaking bill seeking to criminalise the promotion of extreme thinness in the media. We believe that a similar bill should be passed here.
How are you doing it?
The ‘Body Beautiful’ campaign will begin on Monday 23rd February. During this week there will be photo displays, shows and workshops all on the topics of eating disorders and positive body image.
We are hoping to get people from the media involved, as well as eating disorder charities, incorporating talks from those recently recovered from these conditions.
During this week we will also encouraging students to sign a petition to government demanding a similar bill to that of France is passed, as well as lobbying MPs to support more funding and awareness about eating disorders.
LUU’s equality and diversity policy will also be updated to take into consideration the severity of current issues in the press surrounding body image.
What have you achieved so far?
Currently planning events for campaign week! Have a number of eating disorder charities on board, have spoken to student counseling about their potential involvement, and in talks with RAG regarding a ‘body beautiful’ section within their fashion shows.
