About Us

About us

At our club we welcome any student or staff member who is interested in playing chess either socially or competitively.

We also want beginners who are interested in learning how to play the game to come along.

There are lots of experienced players who can teach you how to play chess and plenty of other beginners to learn with as well!

A good number of our players took up Chess when they were young but over the years stopped playing and want to get back into it when they come to Uni.

There's no better place to do this than at Leeds University Chess Club!

The University also competes in the Leeds Chess League Division 2 with matches throughout the year at various venues around Leeds.

For stronger players this gives the opportunity to test yourself in competitive matches for the chance of promotion to Division 1.

In 2009/10 the Chess Society was shortlisted two end of year Riley Awards - Best in LUU and Most Improveed.

Meetings

We meet Mondays from 18:00 till 20:00 in the Parkinson Building Rm B.08 (in the basement!)

We play our matches in ARC Meeting Room 5 on a Wednesday - these usually start around 7.00pm.

Note - there will be ocassions when we play in a different location (such as the Old Bar).

These will be updated on our Facebook group and information will be sent out to everyone on our mailing list.

Directions

Here are some directions from outside the Parkinson to Room B.08 where we play on Tuesday from 6:00 till 8:00PM:

1. Climb the stairs, enter building turn left at reception heading towards the stairs.

2. Walk down two flights of stairs and you should face a computer cluster.

3. Turn right and then first left down a corridor with the cluster still visible through windows on your left—the room we play in is the one at the end of the corridor

We try to have a few socials per semester - these range from drinks in the Old Bar and meals at local resturants in Leeds to going as a team to a Chess tournament in Yorkshire.

The club are playing in the second division of the Leeds League and are hoping to gain promotion back to the First Division where we belong this season!

Membership

Membership costs just £2.50 for the entire year - this allows you to use the boards and attend the training sessions as well allowing you to play for the university teams.
